"What is that?!" That’s a common reaction when Richard shows up in his 1974 Steyer-Puch Pinzgauer. The Pinzgauer was built in Austria and used by the Austrian, Swiss and British armies. In the 1990's the Swiss started updating their fleet with newer, diesel powered trucks and selling off the old ones. A small handful of companies begin importing these vehicles into the U.S. One of those companies is Cold War Re-marketing, in Sedalia, CO, where Richard purchased his. There is actually a fairly strong Pinzgauer following in Colorado.
Beyond the obvious “uniqueness” factor, the Pinz is quite a capable off-road vehicle. Portal axles give it incredible ground clearance and stock, hydraulically actuated lockers give it plenty of traction control. Handling the Pinz does take some getting used to, though, as the limited articulation and cab-over design make driving the Pinz like sitting in the front car of a roller coaster. Richard has mastered the technique needed to handle this machine and often gives spectators a great show climbing obstacles and lifting tires. |
