Trip Report:

Fins and Things
March 27, 2010

by J.D. Meyers

Saturday, March 27 was the last ‘wheeling day of the trip. The night before my Dad drove to Cortez and met me in Moab this morning to ride along with me. He brought me a grease gun as I had a driveshaft CV that was making lots of squeaking noises. We pulled the driveshaft out and greased it up good and replaced it, hoping it would make the last trail day.

The original plan was to run Hells Revenge, but with the Easter Jeep Safari starting today and this trail on their agenda, we decided to run Fins and Things to avoid the trail traffic. As we entered the park, we saw the infamous Lions Back, a giant fin of sandstone people used to pay to drive up. Lions Back is on private property and the current owner has closed it off to vehicles

You might notice the pattern in that we arrive at the trailhead and air the tires down…again. This trail seems to take you right thru some campsites. The first obstacle was a short steep climb. While everyone made it fine, it was a bit tricky for the short wheelbase rigs and tires off the ground was a pretty common occurrence for the old Pinz.

We continued up and down the trail to where it pops back onto the county road. Here the Pinz bailed out to go do some shopping in town. The rest of us continued onto the second and more challenging half of the trail. At one point Loren, in the FJ40, radioed that he had a flat tire. I backed up and gave him some air and we continued down the trail. Apparently, the tire had just burped most of the air out on a rock.

Down the trail, there is another formation in a rock that looks very much like a dinosaur. Very interesting to say the least! The next major obstacle was Kenny’s climb. This is a steep 40ft climb where you are amazed that anything can go up. The only person in our group to have trouble was Chuck in his white Rubicon. I believe I was able to get video of most of our group going up this, but you can see how steep it is by the way the rigs react. As the trail name suggests, there are many more climbs and descents on the slickrock fins. Everyone made it out no worse for the wear. This was a great, moderate trail for slickrock!
