Trip Report:

Independence Getaway
Camping in South Park

by Bill Andrews

Thursday morning Leona and I finished packing the camper and getting ready to go. Deanna Marcy met us at our house about 11:00 a.m. with Hannah and Rachael and soon after that we pulled out. The trip up was uneventful with a stop in Conifer for lunch at Wendy’s. The Jeep was running a little warm pulling the camper up the hills but managed to stay below critical and always cooled right back down when we topped a hill and headed down again.

We reached the campsite a little after 2:00 p.m. and set up camp. My favorite spot was still available, although there were other campers nearby. The afternoon was spent relaxing, playing games, reading and napping. Oddly enough we had cell phone coverage at the campsite (although not down in Jefferson) and late in the afternoon began getting calls telling us the others were on their way. Most of the rest of the crew arrived between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. that evening. After everyone set up and settled in, we enjoyed a spectacular Colorado sunset and a good time around the campfire.

This campsite served as our base of operations for a fun-filled weekend of ‘wheeling and fellowship. The crew included me and my family, James and Wendy and their kids (plus a couple extras), David and Deanna with their girls, James and David’s mom and dad Ed and Sharyn, Travis, Kristen, Richard and Kirsten with their kids, and Kirsten’s mom Karen. Charlie joined us late Friday night and Brian came on Saturday.
